As much as I enjoy discussing the latest and greatest knives, sometimes we need to stop and appreciate the modern classics. As someone who tries to stay on top of all the new stuff coming out, I can tell you that the knife world moves at a breakneck pace. Companies are constantly introducing new and exciting models vying for our attention and dollars. As much as I can appreciate their desire to shower us with awesome new products, I try to occasionally pause and reflect on the real classics in the world of modern folding knives.
Without a doubt one of these classic knives is the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. The little brother to the full size Benchmade Griptilian, the Mini takes a lot of what makes the full size so great and shrinks it down into a package that is perfect for urban EDC. For most people this knife is everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Lets take a closer look at this “new classic” knife and see why it earns that designation.

Owner Jason Brous started Brous Blades relatively recently in 2010 while he was in his early 20’s. Jason came from a CNC machining background as a result of his father (and grandfather before him) who owns a custom machining shop aimed primarily at the medical industry. Jason grew up working on the machine shop floor and soon began developing an interest in knives, realizing the endless possibilities with knife design. As Jason developed competency in CNC machining his passion for knives and knifemaking also began to take off.

When I review knives the kind of steel is very important. First of all, I usually spend quite a bit of time researching the steel. In addition to my own impressions I look to user experiences, manufacturer guidelines, and independent resources on steel. Then, I usually spend a good amount of time in each review discussing the the pros and cons of the steel, why the manufacturer might have selected it and sometimes I even do comparisons and go into detail on heat treating and all of that.

There was a time when most people’s idea of an “every-day-carry” knife consisted of one of the many different types of traditional pocket knife patterns. Their idea of a tactical folder was an Italian-style stiletto, not the modern looking EDC knives you see today.
These days, there seems to be a mass exodus away from the traditional pocket knife patterns of old to what seems to be a long line of various designs of tactical folders which can also serve very well as every-day-carry knives.
In this article, we will talk about both modern and traditional pocket knife patterns because both forms of knives are completely viable options as knives that you can use and carry every day.
